15 Toccatas

About this work

These fifteen toccatas show how many different gestures can hide beneath a single label. Some of Pachelbel's pieces are built on a short, persistent motif; others unfold in continuous motion or set the registers in dialogue. Their compact format makes it possible to compare how each one establishes a key, directs a sequence and reaches its cadence without confusing speed with haste.

At the organ, choose a registration proportionate to the writing of each piece. A massive pleno across all fifteen would eventually erase their profiles. First practise the articulation on a clear principal stop: repeated motifs, common notes and changes of voice will become easier to hear. Use the pedalboard when it carries an independent bass; elsewhere, there is no need to invent a grandeur the texture does not require.

Build a short sequence of three or four contrasting toccatas instead of playing the whole collection in one block. Note the tempo, attack and point of greatest tension in each. The touch can then vary without weakening the collection's coherence. In continuous passagework, think through the harmonic direction: the fingers move a great deal, but the cadence knows where they are going.
