Magnificat : fugue III.7

About this work

This fugue belongs to Pachelbel’s large collection of pieces based on the eight Magnificat tones. In the seventh fugue of the third tone, a short mobile subject enters successively in several voices and organises the entire course.

The replies gradually draw the registers closer, then sequences thicken the texture before the cadences. The writing remains compact: episodes never divert attention from the subject and its returns for long.

Mark every entry in the score and practise voices in pairs. Retain the subject’s articulation as it changes register, lighten connecting notes and build the final rise without unintended acceleration.
