About this work
Caprice No. 24 in A minor closes Paganini’s Opus 1 with a compact theme, eleven variations and a finale. Its phrase structure remains recognisable while texture, register, bowing and the distribution of voices across four strings continually change.
Each variation isolates a challenge: double stops, octaves, slurred runs, wide leaps, bariolage, left-hand pizzicato and repeated chords. The final page combines several of these gestures in an acceleration that firmly restores the minor key.
Memorise the theme’s harmony first, then treat every variation as a separate study. Establish bow contact points before increasing speed and keep lower voices audible in double stops; virtuosity should never obscure the form.
