About this work
Rameau’s Tambourin brings the energy of a Provençal dance to the keyboard. Its regular bass and repeated notes create immediate momentum, but the piece loses its character if every beat is struck with the same hardness. Ornaments, rebounds, and small shifts of weight give the movement its profile.
Begin with the left hand alone, seeking a firm and short pulse. Add the right hand without accelerating through repetitions. Ornaments should begin on the beat and resolve within the tempo; practise them slowly with the final fingering, then reduce the gesture as speed returns.
On harpsichord, articulation and note length create the nuances. On piano, avoid compensating with extensive pedalling: a clear bass and precise releases better convey the dance’s joyful dryness. Keep a little energy in reserve for the reprises. Their interest comes from renewed momentum, not from a systematically louder volume.
