Saint-Saëns’s Morceau de concert Op. 94 compresses three sections into a continuous course for solo horn. A broadly slurred opening idea becomes the basis of transformations in which intervals, appoggiaturas and changes of register explore the instrument’s full range.

The part numbers twelve variation episodes. The figures grow progressively more mobile, alternating slurred and detached articulation before a faster final section brings together scales, arpeggios and repeated attacks.

Practise each variation with planned breathing before connecting the whole work. Fast passages should retain a stable centre to the sound; support the low register without broadening the tempo, then anticipate fingerings for wide leaps.
