About this work
This Prelude draws on the Preludio o capricho arpeado published by Gaspar Sanz in his 1674 Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española. Chords emerge one note at a time while open and stopped strings are allowed to sustain the harmony.
The piece does not pursue a continuous melody: its interest lies in shifts of colour between positions and in small tensions created by held notes. The modern layout preserves this sense of measured improvisation in standard notation.
Let each chord resonate as long as the fingering allows and prepare the left hand before moving the bass. In the right hand, distribute arpeggios without an automatic accent from every thumb stroke; cadences should appear to breathe even within a free pulse.
