About this work
Satie marks the first Gnossienne Lent and removes barlines. A flexible line moves above repeated chords and spaced bass notes; time remains perceptible but is no longer divided by visible metre. Directions such as “Très luisant,” “Questionnez” and “Du bout de la pensée” partly replace conventional expressive markings.
The score fits on two pages. The left hand repeats a small number of positions while the right varies inflection, ornament and phrase length. This apparent freedom does not remove the need for an inner pulse. Without it, rests expand arbitrarily and returning motifs lose their relationship.
Choose a regular underlying unit and count it quietly before allowing the phrase to breathe. Practise left-hand chords with an even attack and immediate release of weight. Add the upper line, giving each verbal direction a concrete musical effect without acting out the words. Pedal should connect the layers while changing with bass notes and accidentals.
