The second Gnossienne begins “Avec étonnement”—with astonishment—and unfolds without barlines. The right hand draws long stepwise arabesques while the left punctuates the course with bass notes and chords. Directions such as “Ne sortez pas,” “Dans une grande bonté” and “Plus intimement” invite changes of colour and proximity rather than constant changes of speed.
