Gnossienne n°4

About this work

The fourth Gnossienne opens Lent, “avec force et expression.” Broad continuous arpeggios fill the left hand and span a wide range while the right enters through fragments, rests and short replies. Unlike the first three, motion here comes from a highly mobile texture: the bass supplies both harmony and momentum.

Across two pages, long slurs lie over regular changes of position. The right hand must remain audible without hardening, and the left must preserve its pattern through leaps. Chromatic passages gradually thicken the texture before a more compressed close. Pedal supports continuity, but a late change blurs each new bass.

Practise the left hand in arpeggio groups, silently preparing each position. Add only the right-hand entries, then rebuild the slurs. Aim for a deep bass and lighter middle register. Change pedal at each new harmony and check slowly that the voices remain distinct through the wide shifts.

What the document containsDocument: The document contains 2 pages in PDF format. A MIDI file also helps locate the continuity and entries. The two-page PDF contains the complete fourth Gnossienne, with broad arpeggios, long slurs, chromatic writing and frequent shifts. The score matches Mutopia Project record 48. The PDF credits Rune Zedeler for the engraving and states that it was placed in the public domain. The file preserved by LesPartitions.info can be compared with the reference catalogue. Following that check, LesPartitions.info separates established facts from information that remains incomplete.
