Gnossienne n°5

About this work

The fifth Gnossienne is a Modéré in 2/4, marked “Souple et expressif.” A regular bass alternates low notes and chords while the right hand develops a line decorated with triplets, sextuplets and septuplets. Metre is visible here, yet irregular groups give the melody a freedom that constantly reaches beyond individual beats.

Forty bars fit on two pages. Long slurs encompass several rhythmic groups and indicate directions broader than local figures. The difficulty is to align structural points in both hands without making the ornaments mechanical. Repeats also require exactly the same pulse after alternative endings.

Use the left hand alone as a musical metronome with two equal pulses. Break down right-hand irregular groups by locating their first and last notes, then align only those points with the bass. Fill in the intervening notes without extra accents. Build dynamics across the whole slur rather than each tuplet.
