Satie marks the first Gymnopédie “Lent et douloureux”—slow and sorrowful—in 3/4. An isolated bass begins each bar, followed by a chord, while a very simple melody unfolds above. This distribution creates a broad sense of space. Slow tempo does not mean immobility: every bar must lead to the next and every long note retain direction.
The piece contains 47 written bars across two pages, with repeats extending its course. Harmonies shift in small steps beneath an often nearly conjunct line. Dynamics remain restrained, from piano to pianissimo, with a few expressive expansions. Overlong pedal mixes the basses; pedal that is too short destroys the resonance connecting the layers.
Practise bass and chords alone, feeling three beats without stressing each one. Add the melody with a more immediate attack but no excess weight. Renew pedal with the harmony and listen to the dying resonance before lifting it. Keep the repeats in the same pulse, varying colour rather than speed.
