Sonate en Do majeur

About this work

This C-major Sonata by Domenico Scarlatti moves in 6/8 over an almost continuous stream of quavers. The right hand presents a lively line punctuated by trills, while the left replies with arpeggios, bass notes and brief imitations. The texture remains transparent: each voice should be traceable even when both hands share the same pattern.

The PDF contains forty-five bars across two pages. Sequences gradually move the material through other harmonic areas before C major returns. Ornaments sit on structural notes and need to preserve their direction. Playing too vertically turns meetings between the hands into chords; excessive lightness, however, erases the bass’s harmonic route.

Practise each hand with the same quaver flow. Join them in two-bar groups and alternately foreground the upper line and bass. Prepare trills slowly with a clean ending before returning them to tempo. Use supple articulation and little pedal so that the replies remain clear.
