10 variations in F Major D.156

About this work

The 10 Variations D.156 begin with an Andante theme in F major whose phrases are clearly balanced. Schubert preserves its proportions and points of arrival while changing figuration, register and the distribution between the hands. The interest lies less in disguising the melody than in making the same course acquire new weight and motion.

Some variations favour rapid passagework, others chords, syncopations or a more exposed texture. Variation IX slows into an Adagio before Variation X renews the set with an Allegro that also moves through Presto, Adagio and Tempo I. This expanded ending gives the cycle a genuine trajectory rather than the character of a sequence of exercises.

Learn the theme first with its bass and cadences, then carry those landmarks into every variation. Rapid figures should lead towards important notes instead of becoming an even stream. Keep tempo and dynamic reserve before the final variation so that its changes of motion remain clear and the conclusion can truly crown the preceding stages.
