13 Variations on a theme of Hüttenbrenner D.576

About this work

Schubert builds the 13 Variations D.576 on a theme in A minor by Anselm Hüttenbrenner. The opening Andantino presents a restrained melody and regular bass whose cadences remain recognisable throughout the cycle. Each return alters the surface without losing that frame.

The variations move the melody among the voices and introduce passagework, chords, dotted rhythms and contrasts of register. Some almost completely lighten the accompaniment; others thicken the texture and require firmer articulation. Variation XIII, Allegro, quickens the motion and gives the ending a cumulative character.

First identify the theme’s bass and play it beneath every variation. This thread helps rank the figurations and prevents fast passages from becoming mechanical. Vary touch more than tempo, renew pedal with each harmonic change and keep a reserve for the final Allegro, which should complete the course without rushing.
