These Viennese dances often fit into a few lines, yet each has its own way of placing a step. The ländler let a simple melody sway above regular accompaniment; the ecossaises tighten the gesture and move more briskly. Their charm depends less on broad rubato than on clear phrase proportions and articulation that leaves air in the texture.
For the ländler, hear the bass as a dancer’s step. It should support without weighing down the music. The right hand can then phrase above it, with small breaths at repeats. In the ecossaises, lighten group endings and prepare changes of direction. Pedal held too long immediately erases the distinction between the two families.
The collection brings together sixteen ländler and two ecossaises. Choose a few contrasting pieces to build a short suite, or use them as a laboratory for touch. They quickly reveal a stiff attack, over-loud accompaniment, or an aimless repeat. Their miniature scale does not forgive inattention, but it does let you correct a detail without spending the whole evening on four stubborn bars.
