About this work
The 2 Scherzos D.593 offer two aspects of the same light style. The first, an Allegretto in B-flat major, moves in short articulated phrases before a more legato Trio in E-flat major. The second, an Allegro moderato in D-flat major, broadens the gesture and leads to a Trio in A-flat major.
In each piece, the scherzo’s return measures the effect of the Trio rather than merely repeating the opening. Changes of register, replies between the hands and small dynamic inflections give relief to a deliberately clear texture. The second piece has sometimes been associated with the Sonata D.567, though that hypothesis does not turn the collection into a sonata.
Practise upbeats and phrase endings before increasing the tempo. The left hand should retain spring without hardening the bass, while the right directs lines beyond the bar lines. In the Trios, reduce weight and lengthen the gesture without losing the pulse that will make the scherzo’s return sound natural.
