The 20 Waltzes D.146, known as the Last Waltzes, occupy 16 pages and revisit several profiles found in neighbouring collections. Each number nevertheless retains its own form, often expanded by a Trio and a clearly marked return.
The first begins with broad chords before a very soft Trio; the fifth, sixth and tenth unfold more brilliant runs. Final pages add chromatic lines, octaves, syncopations and rapid dynamic changes.
Map repeats and keys before practising transitions. A stable triple bass permits flexible timing without losing the dance. In loaded textures, favour the melody’s direction and reduce the weight of inner chords.
