About this work
For Schubert, a march is more than walking in step. The three Marches militaires, D. 733, written for piano four hands, change light and weight from one piece to the next: the first displays its dotted rhythm with panache, the second restrains the gesture, and the third recovers a more open momentum. Above all, they show a theatrical art of repetition in which familiar material returns with enough energy to sound new.
At four hands, first decide who carries the pulse and who colours the phrase. The lower player must provide stable ground without hammering; the upper player can then articulate the calls, lighten the upbeats and guide the crescendos. Practise the joins between sections without automatically taking extra time. If every change causes a halt, the parade soon loses its way.
Accents are more effective when prepared by the movement before them than when added vertically. Listen also to the ends of repeats: some need a true cadence, others only a breath before moving on. One useful rehearsal is to play each march at reduced volume while exaggerating articulation alone; restore the dynamics afterwards without losing the resulting clarity.
