About this work
The 3 Piano Pieces D.946 belong to Schubert’s final year. The first, Allegro assai, moves on an insistent pulse and strongly accented gestures interrupted by much more restrained episodes. Their alternation gives the form almost dramatic scale without placing it inside a conventional sonata design.
The second piece, Allegretto, brings back a simple idea between episodes of sharply differing colour. The third, Allegro, relies on an energetic dance rhythm, repetitions and shifts of register. Together, the 3 pieces show how a concise cell can sustain a broad architecture through contrast and return.
The first priority in practice is a stable pulse beneath the changes of character. Prepare transitions before widening dynamics in the first piece; direct the bass under long lines in the second; keep chords short and mobile in the third.
