About this work
The 34 Valses sentimentales D.779 form a 14-page panorama rather than a uniform suite. Several numbers incorporate a Trio or contrasting section, and the edition sometimes returns to familiar motifs under different harmonic light.
Waltzes 5, 6 and 10 noticeably broaden the writing through arpeggios and powerful chords, whereas others remain almost bare. The Zart marking in the thirteenth, abrupt dynamics and extreme registers repeatedly interrupt the ballroom continuity.
Choose a few coherent groups before attempting all thirty-four. Stabilise bass patterns and repeats, then differentiate each number’s touch. On virtuoso pages, direct arpeggios towards the melody and lighten the intervening notes.
