About this work
The D.697 catalogue comprises 6 Ecossaises in A-flat major, but this PDF contains 5: Nos. 1 to 4 followed by No. 6. The fifth also appears in another collection of Schubert dances, which explains its omission from this edition.
These pieces use fuller writing than several neighbouring miniatures. Long slurs, changes of register, accents and repeated chords alter the relief from one number to the next. The final ecossaise even develops continuous motion shared between the hands.
Mark repeats and dynamic changes first, then practise the lines above a lightened bass. In the denser passages, the melody must remain clear without hardening the chords. The last piece benefits from being grouped by direction rather than approached note by note.
