5 Piano Pieces D.459

About this work

The document brings together 5 pieces traditionally published under the numbers D.459 and D.459a. The first 2 form the Piano Sonata in E major, D.459; the following 3 were added in an early publication, which explains why the set is also presented as a sonata in 5 movements. This editorial history needs to remain visible.

The opening Allegro moderato develops clear, mobile material and is followed by a more incisive Scherzo. The central Adagio slows the course before a second Scherzo with Trio, while the final Allegro patetico brings markedly greater weight and tension. The diversity of characters makes the set persuasive even without deciding its original unity.

Give each piece its own touch before seeking connections of key, rhythm and register. Repeats in the scherzos must retain momentum, while the Adagio requires a directed bass and measured pedalling. In the finale, reserve the broadest sound for the closing pages so that the entire movement does not become heavy.
