D.970 is a set of 6 Ländler that has also been published under the title German Dances. Across 2 pages, the pieces alternate stepwise melodies, repeated notes, chords and short rises through the register; the preserved edition uses the latter name.
Some numbers close directly, while others include a contrasting part and an instruction to return. The fourth lightens the texture, the fifth places greater emphasis on chords, and the sixth develops a rising line above a regular bass.
Mark the repeat routes before playing the set. The left hand should supply consistent support without flattening the characters. In rising lines, group notes towards their peak and release chords immediately after attack to retain spring.
