The complete 8 Ecossaises D.977 are gathered across 3 pages. The first two establish light writing based on upbeats and short chords. Later pieces add longer slurs, doublings, accents and more pronounced changes of register.
The collection does not follow a strict progression of difficulty, but its density expands. The sixth develops a more continuous line, the seventh contrasts the registers more strongly, and the eighth introduces more prominent chords before its repeat.
Practise each bass as a dance gesture, then add the upper line without altering the length of the accents. Repeats should retain the same tempo while allowing a slight change of colour. The later pieces require chords to be released immediately after their attack.
