About this work

The Sonatine D.968 is written for piano four hands and has 2 movements: an Allegro moderato in C major followed by an Andante in A minor. Its two parts answer one another constantly and distribute the themes between Secondo and Primo.

In the Allegro, a continuous pulse passes between the partners beneath highly regular themes. The Andante darkens the colour through repeated chords, chromatic lines and replies that gradually widen the register.

Both pianists should agree on breaths, dynamic changes and the ends of runs. Practise each part with the other player’s landmarks, then combine them slowly: the repeated accompaniment must support the dialogue without covering the melody.
