About this work
This Andantino varié is the second movement of the Divertissement D.823 for piano four hands. A simple, regular theme is followed by 4 variations that transform it through rapid runs, chords, changes of register and new distributions between Secondo and Primo.
The first two variations increase activity while preserving the phrase structure. The third broadens the arpeggios; the fourth, marked Un poco più lento, withdraws virtuosity in favour of long lines and a gentler dialogue before Tempo I returns.
Count subdivisions together and identify which partner carries the theme in each variation. Rapid accompaniments should remain light. In the slower section, share breaths and diminuendos so that both parts form a single phrase.
