Danse allemande D.975

About this work

The German Dance D.975 relies almost entirely on a repeated accompaniment rhythm. Above this regular frame, the upper voice moves through short motives, repeated notes and changes of direction that sustain interest across a single page.

Repetition does not imply static dynamics. Harmonic shifts, rising registers and cadences alter the weight of the chords. The second half broadens the gesture before clearly closing the form.

Practise the accompaniment first at low volume, selecting only the essential accents. Add the melody without increasing weight on every repeated note. Pedal should remain very brief; momentum comes from regularity and changes of direction rather than continuous resonance.
