About this work
The first movement of the Divertissement D.823 for piano four hands is a Tempo di Marcia in E minor. Secondo and Primo share the calls, chords and long lines that shape the march.
The march contrasts dotted rhythms and massive chords with episodes in which long arpeggios pass between the partners. Several piano withdrawals suspend the momentum before octaves and repeated chords rebuild a broad rise in sound.
