About this work
The Wanderer Fantasy D.760 joins 4 linked movements into a single architecture. The Allegro con fuoco ma non troppo opens with a strongly driven rhythm that passes through chords, octaves and changes of register. This profile connects the whole work far beyond its first appearance.
The Adagio transforms the material through a sequence of slow variations before the Presto gives it an almost dancing spring. The final Allegro turns towards counterpoint and accumulates entries up to the broad concluding chords. Transitions without a true break allow the 4 sections to sound like stages in one continuous course.
The work requires endurance to be managed while its highly virtuosic writing remains structurally clear. Practise chords by their arrival points, use a released gesture in octaves and base each change of section on a shared pulse. In the finale, make the entries audible before adding pedal; the power is more convincing when every voice retains its outline.
