About this work
The Piano Piece in A major, D.604 is a short Andante often associated with the unfinished Sonata D.571. A peaceful line first rests on regular chords before the motion becomes more fluid. Schubert nevertheless preserves the clarity of the opening phrase through the changes of register.
The middle section passes semiquaver figures between the hands and gradually widens the range. Returns of the opening material are not identical: accompaniment, chord inversions and dynamics alter their light. The form remains compact, but it requires careful attention to its layers of sound.
In study, isolate the upper line and bass before adding the inner figures. Pedal can connect harmonies without obscuring their changes. Choose a tempo that allows small inflections to breathe; the piece depends on continuity and colour rather than demonstrative virtuosity.
