About this work
The Piano Sonata in C major D.279 dates from 1815 and survives without a finale. Its Allegro moderato, Andante and Menuetto nevertheless form a coherent course, from the clear impetus of the opening to the darker dance in A minor.
The first movement animates Classical formulas through harmonic shifts and replies across registers. The Andante favours a more settled continuity while the Menuetto contrasts sharp accents with the release of the Trio.
Do not try to compensate for the missing finale with an overemphatic ending. Organise repeats, keep bass lines active beneath connected phrases and distinguish Menuetto from Trio through touch and articulation.
