Sonate en Do mineur D.958

About this work

Schubert wrote the Piano Sonata in C minor D.958 in 1828. The opening Allegro immediately asserts a tense rhythm and powerful chords, then broadens the discourse through more connected episodes and shifts of register.

The Adagio alternates calm with dark eruptions. The Menuetto retains contained unease, while the final Allegro turns a running motion into a broad trajectory whose returns constantly vary in intensity.

Establish the pulse before working on contrasts. Keep chords free, direct the bass in the Adagio and resist automatic acceleration in the finale: tension comes from form as much as from speed.
