Piano Sonata D.557, written in 1817, begins in A-flat major but ends in E-flat. The Allegro moderato presents a supple theme above mobile figures; the Andante slows the discourse before a more direct final Allegro.
Changes of register and altered returns lend breadth to a work of modest dimensions. In the central movement chords and silences matter as much as the line; the finale then condenses motifs within a lively pulse.
