About this work
The Piano Sonata in A minor D.537 dates from 1817. The Allegro ma non troppo opens with an energetic dotted rhythm and contrasting replies; Schubert transforms this material through shifts of register and sudden dynamic changes.
The Allegretto quasi Andantino in E major offers a calmer line whose idea would return later in Sonata D.959. The final Allegro vivace restores rhythmic tension and drives it through rapid sequences.
Distinguish structural weight from local accents. In the central movement keep the bass moving beneath the connected line; in the finale practise sequences in tempo stages and keep returns of the motif immediately recognisable.
