About this work
The Piano Sonata in A minor D.784, written in 1823, is striking for the economy of its Allegro giusto. Bare octaves, silences and sudden replies create a tension that Schubert develops without systematically filling the space.
The Andante in F major establishes regular motion, disturbed by darker episodes and displaced accents. The final Allegro vivace releases a pressing flow in which rapid runs and chords retain the gravity of the opening key.
Treat silences as elements of the phrase. In the first movement give octaves weight without hardness; in the Andante vary colour rather than tempo, then keep an even subdivision throughout the finale’s broad crescendos.
