About this work
The Piano Sonata in A minor D.845, published in 1826, opens with a Moderato whose octaves and interrupted chords establish lasting tension. Ideas return transformed, with gaps between registers gradually broadening the space.
The Andante poco mosso develops a theme in variations, then the Scherzo contrasts sharp accents with a more restrained Trio. The final Rondo combines continuous motion, contrasting episodes and returns whose energy grows towards the close.
Build the first movement from pulse rather than force. In the variations change colour while preserving the theme; lighten the Scherzo and practise the Rondo in cells so that speed obscures neither bass lines nor articulation.
