About this work
Schubert wrote the Piano Sonata in E major D.157 in 1815. Its three surviving movements — Allegro ma non troppo, Andante and Menuetto — combine Classical proportions with shifts of register and colour that are already highly personal.
The first movement alternates assertive figures with more supple replies. The minor-key Andante narrows the space around a restrained line, then the Menuetto restores an angular energy that its Trio softens without erasing.
Practise contrasts without breaking the continuity of phrases. In the Allegro prepare shifts before accents; in the Andante sustain long notes through harmonic direction, then give the Menuetto dancing weight without heaviness.
