About this work
Schubert’s Piano Sonata in E minor D.566 from 1817 has an incomplete editorial history. The present document supplies only its first movement, Moderato: an anxious motif alternates with brighter replies and rapid shifts of register.
The texture moves from concentrated chords to freer lines, then returns to the opening motif in different colours. Dynamic contrasts and silences articulate the form as strongly as the cadences.
Practise the motif’s rhythm without pedal, then add resonance in brief touches. Keep chords flexible, prepare leaps from the bass and allow major-key clearings to change the colour without artificial slowing.
