About this work
The Piano Sonata in D major D.850, written in 1825, opens with a broad Allegro vivace. Repeated chords, dotted rhythms and shifts of register sustain an almost orchestral energy across the entire form.
The Con moto organises variations of colour around regular motion. A massive Scherzo and more supple Trio precede the final Rondo, whose mobile motif returns under different lights before a brilliant close.
Choose a tempo that allows repeated chords to remain free. In the Con moto direct each variation towards the next; lighten repeats in the Scherzo and keep a constant pulse in the Rondo despite wide changes of register.
