About this work
The Piano Sonata in B-flat major D.960, completed in 1828, opens with a Molto moderato of exceptional breadth. A peaceful line is repeatedly disturbed by a low trill and by harmonic shifts that alter the listener’s sense of time.
The Andante sostenuto establishes a dark tread, the Scherzo recovers fragile lightness and the final Allegro ma non troppo combines a leaping refrain, silences and increasingly remote episodes.
Do not rush repeats or silences. Balance bass and upper line, give the low trill presence without hardness and build the finale through its large returns rather than as a succession of details.
