Variation sur une valse de Diabelli D.718

About this work

In his Variation D.718, Schubert answers the waltz proposed by Diabelli without seeking brilliance. The move into C minor darkens the dance, tightens its motion, and reveals an almost painful hesitation beneath the regular phrasing. The miniature is brief, yet its atmosphere changes with each displaced accent and harmonic detour.

First keep the waltz rhythm very simple, with a present first beat and light following chords. Then bring out the line that crosses the texture without confusing melody with volume. Repeats provide room to refine the colour: a turn in the bass, a suspended dissonance, or a silence may be enough, with no need to add a ritardando at every cadence.

Practise the piece in a single span as soon as the notes are secure. Its tension depends on the relationship between continuity and resistance, not on a sequence of small effects. With a measured pulse and breathing phrase endings, Schubert’s transformation of social material into a concentrated confidence becomes clear before the parenthesis closes almost immediately.
