Ich grolle nicht Op. 48 n°7
About this work
Ich grolle nicht is the seventh song in Schumann’s Dichterliebe Op. 48, setting a poem by Heinrich Heine. The voice insists that it bears no grudge, yet the piano’s repeated chords and the persistent vocal line make that claim increasingly difficult to believe.
The first stanza remains contained; the second broadens the range and rises towards a high climax when the text evokes the serpent consuming the heart. The brief postlude does not resolve the conflict: its chords close the scene with almost theatrical firmness.
Keep the piano chords regular and resonant without making them heavy. The voice should carry consonants while preserving the line, then prepare the climax through breath rather than slowing down; both parts must share every dynamic change precisely.
