The first of the Kinderszenen, headed Von fremden Ländern und Menschen, is made from a single page and a handful of gestures. In G major and 2/4, a very simple upper line rests above an arpeggiated accompaniment shared between the hands. The melody never separates completely from the texture, since some of its notes also belong to the chords. It must emerge through weight and length without interrupting the continuity of the quavers.

The opening phrase returns after a repeat, while the middle briefly alters the harmony and shifts the points of emphasis. A ritardando leads to a fermata; a tempo then restores the initial movement. The dynamic remains mainly piano, with small crescendos and decrescendos. This restraint exposes every imbalance: an over-present bass or an accented inner note can hide the upper contour for several bars.

Practise the melody alone with its actual fingering, then play the accompaniment without its upper notes. Combine the layers quietly and check that quavers keep the same length when they pass between hands. Pedal can connect the harmony, but it needs sufficiently frequent changes to preserve the moving bass. Finally, prepare the ritardando across several pulses and recover the exact opening tempo after the fermata.
