In Bittendes Kind, Schumann places a descending line inside a continuous arpeggiated texture. The piece is in D major and 2/4, yet accidentals and a moving bass make its harmony unsettled. Dynamics hover between piano and pianissimo. The melody must remain perceptible within the texture rather than becoming a separate strand laid above the accompaniment.

The same gestures return with small changes of bass and register. Several ritardando markings slow the ends of phrases; one a tempo return restarts the motion before the final suspension. Written pedal marks support particular harmonic changes, but important notes still need to be held by the fingers. The fermata ending preserves a sense of expectation instead of offering a brilliant resolution.

Begin by extracting the middle line and decide which notes genuinely need to carry. Next play the arpeggios alone, evenly and without pedal, before combining both layers.
