Kinderszenen, Op. 15 No. 5 — Happy Enough

Glückes genug is a D-major piece in 2/4 whose gentleness rests on unexpectedly dense writing. An upbeat launches semiquavers distributed between the hands; the melody first appears on top and later slips into the inner voices. Sustained bass notes and long slurs create a second motion beneath the surface. The player must rank several lines without losing the lightness of the pulse.

Phrases return with chromatic inflections, short crescendos and passages where the bass becomes more active. Two a tempo markings restore motion after local relaxations, while a longer ritardando leads into the close. Chords gradually tighten and shift the balance between hands. A purely vertical reading would make the piece heavy; continuity comes from lines extending through the harmonic changes.

Mark the principal voice in every bar and play it with the bass, leaving out the inner semiquavers. Add one voice at a time while preserving the same melodic weight. Practise the a tempo returns with a metronome sounding only on the first pulse of each bar. Pedal should follow the bass rather than conceal chromatic movement. In the final ritardando, allow all voices to settle together without thickening the last chords.
