Kinderszenen, Op. 15 No. 6 — An Important Event
About this work
Wichtige Begebenheit changes the scale of the cycle abruptly. In A major and 3/4, the piece advances through full chords, rising bass figures and repeated accents. Its upbeat leads immediately into forte. This assertive character does not require a heavy sound throughout: chords should remain articulated and allow the direction of the bass to be heard.
The first section establishes a squarely paced march with mezzo-forte replies. At the start of the repeated middle section, a fortissimo passage moves the chords into the lower register and introduces descending bass figures. A sforzando followed by a short crescendo then restarts the phrase before the initial material returns.
Practise the outer voices first, upper melody and bass, while retaining the written accents. Add inner notes with less weight so that the chords do not lock. Prepare changes of clef and position during longer values. At the return, recover the opening forte without carrying over the heaviness of the lower register.
