Prelude opus 16 n°03

About this work

Alexander Scriabin marks his Prelude, Op. 16 No. 3 Andante cantabile. In G-flat major, its melody unfolds in long curves above chords with constantly moving inner voices. The apparent calm therefore depends on careful balance: the singing line must lead while the bass retains a clear sense of direction.
Balancing the piano texture
Begin with melody and bass alone to hear the harmonic arc, then add the middle notes quietly. Chromatic shifts and common tones can cloud the sound if the pedal remains down too long. Change it with the harmony while connecting the voices with the fingers wherever possible.
Tuplets should settle into the pulse without mechanical accents. Keep the wrist free in chords and prepare changes of register before each attack. Dynamic growth often spans several bars, so reserve the fullest sound for genuine high points. The final measures can then return gradually to the inward, singing character of the opening.
