Les Partitions

About this work

The fourth prelude inhabits a very narrow space where silences matter as much as chords. The bass places a few low reference points; above them, the voices seem to hesitate before continuing.

Count every breath and listen to the actual length of the resonances. A sustained inner note may connect two chords across the apparent emptiness, while an abrupt ending breaks the phrase.

Play quietly at first without automatically slowing down. Pedal needs to respect the written silences; retain it only when the harmony requires a continuity the fingers cannot provide.
