The first Divertissement, Op. 1, is an Andante in G major and 3/4. Sor fits melody, bass and inner chords onto a single staff: the guitar appears to speak in several voices although one right hand must distribute all the layers. The upper line has priority, yet the low notes direct the harmony and cannot be treated as mere supports.

Two repeated sections shape the piece. Slurs, appoggiaturas and replies in the middle register alter the phrase without interrupting its motion. Chords need to remain short enough for the metre to breathe, while selected bass notes continue beneath later notes. The challenge is therefore polyphonic as well as technical.

Extract melody and bass, then play them together without the inner voices. Restore the chords quietly. Prepare left-hand shifts before appoggiaturas and keep three steady beats through cadences. Once the layers are stable, the repeats can take a different dynamic without changing tempo.
