Divertissements Op. 1 n°2 : Valse

About this work

The second piece of Op. 1 is a Waltz in G major and 3/8. A mobile melody stands above brief bass notes and chords, with replies moving quickly between positions. The dance rhythm remains present, but Sor does not ask for every first beat to be hammered: the phrase crosses several bars on its way to the cadence.

Two repeated sections alternate slurred notes, small chords and more stepwise runs. Voices occasionally cross in the middle register, making balance delicate. An overlong bass blurs the secondary layer, while excessively dry chords break continuity. The right hand needs both a precise support and an immediate withdrawal.

Practise the bass with only the top note of each chord. Restore inner voices once the swing remains steady. Use a guide finger where the score permits during shifts. Finally join the repeats without a pause and reserve small changes of pace for genuine phrase endings.
